Welcome Home Poem

"Threeturn"
By: Roy Pulfrey

We started the year with goals set high,
A veteran crew ready to fly.
But a rise to the top to get your turn,
Is not a gift, it's something you earn.

So we laced up our shoes and hit the floor,
Drills and sprints and a whole lot more.
The games at night are always fine,
But a team is made with the daily grind.

Football left us one Lion less,
Larson got hurt, his ankle a mess.
A January start is how he would settle,
Listening to rap, but his leg heavy metal.

The rest of the team had to pick up the slack.
And that's what they did with guys like Zach.
His outside shot would not be enough,
So he developed inside and even a stuff.

Don't get fooled by his infectious grin,
Donte's a demon with a will to win.
Brians high-arching threes are no cause for fret,
They return to earth after ripping the net.

If you think Bo is soft, give me a break.
This kid's as tough as an over-cooked steak.
And go start the bus, our foes chances have ceased,
When Drew gets that look, the beast is unleashed.

A champion team needs to have a deep bench.
Brent, Jordan, and Chance emerged from the trench.
We got what we needed from the dynamic three,
Two big and strong, one quick as a bee.

Raasch led the team forward, undefeated is nice,
But in one fateful week we stubbed our toes twice.
"Regroup" he said, 'the season's much longer."
"This won't kill us now, we'll get a lot stronger."

We finished the schedule winning nine in a row.
When District time came, we were ready to go.
With number one seed, we entered the brawl.
The Titans were strong, in the end they would fall.

Championship game was with Aberdeen Christian.
Title defense was our number one mission.
They couldn't solve our triangle and two
We cut the nets, their season was through.

On to the Region and the Rosholt Rams.
There were hoping for upset, we had other plans.
The game was a blowout, 'twas something to see.
We've done it again, going back to State B.

Havoc and noise our fans will create.
If you want a good seat, then don't be late.
And our great cheerleaders, we're glad you're there.
Leading us on with international flair.

T-shirts get made and tickets are sold.
Seeking the title never gets old.
Don your maroon, let adrenaline flow,
'Cuz here we go Lions, here we go.

First on the list was the team from Platte-Geddes.
We wanted the crown, but fate would'nt let us.
Our start was strong, we led most the way.
They owned the fourth quarter, it was not our day.

Day two, White River, need I say more?
Everyone knew that this would be war.
It was clear to us a win wan in reach,
But we never guessed it would take five OT's.

We locked horns with Faith on the last day,
Hoping we had enough left to play.
The game wasn't always beauty and grace,
But we gutted it out and claimed fifth place.

All-tourney honors went to Bo and Drew.
They were our leaders the whole year through.
We'll miss the five seniors, our heart and soul.
It's awfully hard to see you guys go.

The team worked hard trying to be number one.
A valiant try, we had a good run.
Our two class B losses weren't so bad, I reckon.
One finished first, the other one second.

You try as a coach to develop team skills,
But game night wins aren't the only thrills.
It's hard to describe the feeling when,
You spend the whole winter watching boys become men.
